As promised, here is my take on the debate. My political commentary might be boring for some of you to read, but for me sitting here and typing my point of view is my way of really establishing to myself what my point of view is. It makes me organize my thoughts into something that makes sense, at least to myself. Living on our own here in California, Tamara and I are realizing just how different Utah is from the rest of the country. Really, every part of the country is very different from all other parts, but to Utah's credit, it is the state that is least affected by the financial crisis, while California is possibly the most affected. I see the effects everywhere I go. Homeless and unemployment rates are getting higher, and taxes are going up. Stores, dealerships, and offices are closing down, banks are failing, and everywhere you look you see signs for Obama's campaign and gay rights. I think the difference, to be honest, is strong leadership in Utah, and the successful application of conservatism, which takes the government out of people's personal lives as much as possible. Therefore, without the meddling hand of government to screw everything up, a thriving free market keeps Utah afloat when the rest of the government-controlled country (especially the absolute socialist city of San Francisco) is sinking like a rock. Mad props to Utah.
Anyway, my point in all of that is that in only 6 months here in California my perspective on the political workings of this country have been changed. I was always conservative in Utah, but I never saw for myself the effects of a democrat-controlled government. Now, in the most liberal part of the country, I have to deal with their absolute nonsense legislation at a local level. I swear, every time I hear Gavin Newsom (the "Honorable" Mayor of San Francisco) say anything at all I just want to throw up. He takes away more rights and freedom of personal citizens every single day. He is all about government control and socialism, and he, like Obama and Biden, is an enemy of freedom. This state is a mess because of assinine (the democrat symbol is, coincidentally, a jackass) policies of democrats. No, not democrats, because the democrats of today are not the democrats of yesterday, like John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, or Franklin D. Roosevelt, who actually had some honor and respect for freedom and this country. The "democrats" of today, like Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Gavin Newsom, Billary, Obama, and Biden, actually have more in common with Castro, Lenin, and Marx. They are about control and power and blowing government up so that it controls nearly every aspect of people's lives. It makes me sick and horrified. I truly worry sometimes that one day I will tell stories to my kids and grandkids about the time when America let people be free and make their own choices and didn't control everything.
So the debate was so much better than the presidential debate a few nights ago. I think there was more riding on this debate than there was on the presidential debate. Both candidates were far more appealing and genuine. Biden, I have to give credit, was incredibly good at one thing: lying. I've never seen a more convincing liar. He denied several times that he and Obama had never said things that I had clearly heard them both say, like positions on the war, the troop surge, and Obama's experience. And Sarah Palin, I have to say, failed to call him out on his lying. He shamelessly called her truth lies, and she didn't defend them, and she didn't call him in his lies. I was puzzled by that. She was right on in so many ways, though. On nearly all of the issues I am right there with her and I was proud of her, but I do not think she went after Biden like she should have. Its like she was trying too hard to be nice. I wanted to see the pitbull with lipstick. Aside from that, I am re-energized by her. It is such a breath of fresh air into politics for a new kind of leadership in the republican party. Corrupt and greedy republicans have been making headlines for too long, and now that we have someone with a real engenuity makes me proud again of my party. I love seeing the media stretching so far to smear and destroy her and realizing just how not-stupid the majority of the country is. Only the Bay Area is as stupid as the media thinks :) The rest of the country doesn't buy their garbage, and good for them.

I think maybe she was trying to be the bigger person in the debate and not slump to his level. Isn't that the conservative thing to do??
Yeah Marcus, I'm sure that's what she was doing. I'm sure behind the scenes she was told not to go after him personally on every issue, including lying, because I'm also sure that he was drilled behind the scenes not to attack her, not to be insulting, not to tear down a woman. The end perception though, was that uninformed viewers may be under the impression now that Sarah Palin is a liar because Joe Biden said she was, and she didn't deny it. I think she could have stuck to and made more emphasis on some of her points that Biden was defending with lies. She didn't need to call him a liar, but she could have referenced things to prove that what he was saying just did not hold up. I'm sure she could have, she just chose not to. Who knows though. Maybe there was more going on than I know about behind the scenes.
Good post Ryan, I've wondered a little bit about the financial crisis because, as you said, Utah is riding high. I think Utah is going to continue to stand out, or as someone else once said, be a 'peculiar people'. I used to think that meant as Mormons we'd just be viewed as odd-ducks, but I'm starting to realize it means more that as the world gets worse and worse and hardships get larger, Utah will be peculiar in that the effect doesn't seem to be quite as widespread, as long as we stay the course. Over 85% of the church's tithing comes from the Wasatch Front, and it's obvious that prosperity and the 'windows of heaven' are opened. Sadly, as this gap between Utah and other places grow, the wolves in sheep's clothing will begin to show up more and more.
Back to the debate! The one thing that Biden said that hit me so hard was his definition of 'Fair' when referring to those making over $250K. It's the sick, liberal mentality that it's just not fair that there are rich people. They lead you to believe that everyone that makes any money is a greedy, corporate top dog that's dishonest in their practice and have pockets filled with huge severance packages. WAIT! Why are some of Fannie and Freddie's former severance padded CEO's on the Obama team then? That's pretty hypocritical, don't ya think? The very people that are having millions of fingers pointed at them are on his team. You can't play in shit and not smell like it.I'm glad you're giving us all an insight to that mentality and socialist structure and how it's affecting California; truly a testament to just how wrong the current Democratic platform is.
But Palin... what a light in darkness! When she talks about the middle class crunch you have to realize that she's in it! Granted, she's on her way out of it (politics pays well) but she's spent her entire life thus far in the middle class. With normal jobs, normal debt, normal kids, normal school, no special treatment because of mommy and daddy, none of that. She's as core of an American as you can find, and the media is scared to death of her. She did fantastic last night, and I hope that John McCain shows her off everywhere; she's truly the diamond of the campaign.
Well, this isn't my blog so I'll stop. :)
A pitbull with lipstick? Interesting.
I am so not into politics but by reading your blog I get all the update I need. Thanks
P.S It may be sometime before I come back due to the profanity used by Joel in his comments. tisk tisk tisk
Yeah Joel, where do you get off using profanity on my blog? Shame on you! j/k i love it. Yes Obama is quite the hypocrite having freddie and fannie head honchos on his team. He received more money from them in donations that any other single source, I've heard. The democrats do not have the country's best interest in mind. That's not to say all democrats are non-patriotic, but pretty much all the ones making headlines do not give a bleep about anything besides their own election and standings in the polls. To be fair, there is a fair share of non-patriotic republicans out there as well, but no one can stand on their two feet and make any claim to the contrary about McCain & Palin, Romney, Giuliani, Huckabee, Ron Paul or any of the other widely recognized republicans of the day. It is sad that in a time when we finally have some respectable, honorable men and women, the media has actualy succeeded in fooling the uninformed people in the country into believing that the democrats are the honorable ones and the republicans are evil. Sick sick sick.
Gov. Palin's hair looked incredible. Did she trade the gov personal chef for a personal hair stylist, or does she do it herself?
Yea, and I'm wondering where I can get a pair of glasses like hers!
You've never seen a more convincing liar? Does he "actually" beat the Clinton's?
